About TwelveTone

TwelveTone is a personal colour laboratory: it measures the colours you are actually made of, and derives what to wear from them.

What it does

Personal colour analysis has a long history of being done badly — by eye, under bad light, using a four-season model that was never able to describe olive skin, multi-ethnic complexions or anyone whose undertone sits between warm and cool. TwelveTone implements the Sci\ART 12-tone system devised by Master Munsell Colorist Kathryn Kalisz, which maps human colouring onto Albert Munsell's three-dimensional colour space: hue, value and chroma.

Eight neutral sub-seasons sit between the four pure archetypes. That is what lets the system identify your primary visual characteristic — lightness, depth, clarity or softness — rather than forcing a warm-or-cool binary that most people do not fit.

How the analysis works

Both pathways reduce to the same three axis coordinates. The questionnaire reads temperature well and chroma poorly; a photo reads value and chroma well but is vulnerable to white-balance error. Each is weighted by the confidence it actually has, which is why running both gives a better answer than either alone.

Photo analysis uses OpenCV to locate your face, sample the forehead and cheeks, discard specular glare and deep shadow, and cluster what remains in CIELAB. The image is analysed in memory and never written to disk — only the three resulting colours are stored.

From palette to outfit

A palette on its own does not tell you what to wear. TwelveTone adds the structural layer: the 60-30-10 proportion rule, sandwich dressing, low-sitting visual weight, asymmetric saturation, and Alan Flusser's rule that an outfit's internal contrast should mirror the contrast of the wearer's own face.
